  • You Asked For It: 80*D

I've been pretty hard on Mesa bands in general and Mesa punk bands in particular here in our weekly You Asked For It local CD review column. It's not that I have anything against Mesa (I live there) or punk bands (I was a big fan of them in my younger years) it's just that most of the ones I've heard suck. I've said before and I'll say again: It's hard to make good punk music when you live someplace as nice as suburban Phoenix. You try to come across as righteously angry, but end up sounding lik

  • Jimmy Eat World to Offer Vinyl Re-mastered 'Clarity' on Tour

Hometown rock heroes Jimmy Eat World have re-mastered Clarity in honor of the disc's 10th anniversary and are offering it as part of an exclusive package on their 10-date Clarity X 10 tour. The package, which is available online and through vinyl-only on the tour, features the bonus tracks "Christmas Card" and a demo for "Sweetness" along with a souvenir tour t-shirt.Clarity was Jimmy Eat World's second major effort for Capitol Records and spawned the hit "Lucky Denver Mint." Despite the crit

  • Reflections on Clarity: William Reed

William Fucking Reed"Clarity is arguably one of the most important albums of the nineties. Released at a time when grunge had seemingly faded into oblivion, rave was king and rock was getting boring, Jimmy Eat World released an album that had it all -- soul, genuine emotion, pop rock sensibility and punk rock appeal -- making it nearly impossible not to love. Jimmy Eat World made it OK for pop-punk to be emotional. And ten years on, Clarity is still as relevant as it was when it was released --

  • Review of Jimmy Eat World's NYC Show

Ashley HarrisJimmy Eat World playing Clarity in NYC.We should probably just declare this Jimmy Eat World Week at New Times. We've got an essay about Clarity running in Thursday's paper, along with my column on the 10 best emo songs of all time. On Up on the Sun, we've got a series of posts about Clarity's impact running every day up to Saturday's show at the Marquee, thanks to our man Steve Chilton. So, what the hell, here's one more post on J.E.W., courtesy of So Much Silence, which ran a revie

  • Reflections on Clarity: Tachi Denton of Snakes! Snakes! Snakes!

"I'm not going to lie, I really wasn't all that into Jimmy Eat World when Clarity first came out. I was only interested in listening to ska and punk rock and wanted nothing to do with so-called "emo" music.I don't remember what eventually got me to listen to Clarity but I had decided I would give the whole album a listen. Then make my judgment call. I honestly was blown away. I still, to this day, get chills when I listen to "For Me This Is Heaven." Sometimes I even cry. I love every note and cho

  • Reflections on Clarity: Evan Muhlstein

"When Clarity entered my life, I had been a part-time fan of Jimmy Eat World, ever since my brother (a member of a local band), took me to see them at The Nile. But Clarity is what changed my life. Along with a group of friends, we all fell in love with it. The album represented to me the friendship and good times I experienced during the discovery of the soundtrack of my life. The hometown love and respect I have developed over time is that of a true and honest fan of the band. And it's all

  • Reflections On Clarity: Evan Fox of KNESSET

"Jimmy Eat World is one of those early on indie rock influences for me. Static Prevails and Clarity had a huge hand in shaping a lot of what I do musically today. Its funny because, when asked to write a short review on Clarity, my band KNESSET had just played a show in San Diego. On the way there we decided to have our own version of the Clarity show by listening to the record start to finish since both Jeff or myself didn't have tickets to the sold out show this weekend. Its been a few years s

  • Reflections on Clarity: Rajiv Patel of Dear and the Headlights

"I remember being really young when the album Clarity by Jimmy Eat World came out. For me, it was the first realization that a band that lived in the same ZIP code as me could go out and make it. For my friends and me, it was an inspiring album, as I'm sure it was for many other kids that lived in Mesa at the time. Each song sounds unique and sends a different message although the album as a whole is very unified and cohesive. Clarity influenced all Arizona bands one way or another and it inf

  • Reflections On Clarity: Marty Welker

"Jimmy Eat World's Clarity holds a special place in my heart as I'm sure it does with the countless other kids who bought it in 1999 of which it became the soundtrack to all of their high school break-ups and inadequacies. It wasn't just kid stuff though because I found my mother listening to it almost as much as I was. It's a little hard to explain it's affect on me at the time. It really felt like a complete record owing to it's mood, sound and relevancy. I've always had an attachment to

  • Jimmy Eat World's Clarity Anniversary Show Impressive

Luke Holwerda All week we've been sharing personal essays about Jimmy Eat World's Clarity, online and in print. Sadly, I don't have a Clarity story because I wasn't in to the Mesa emo/pop act until my college paper got an advance copy of Bleed American, the follow-up to Clarity, in July 2001. But man, oh man, did I love Bleed American. We played that record a few times every day in the college paper office, to the point that our ex-Deadhead newspaper adviser knew all the words. On September 10, 2

  • The Academy Is..., This Providence Cover Jimmy Eat World's 'A Sunday'

The Academy Is... likes Sundays, too. The Academy Is... and This Providence did a stellar version of Jimmy Eat World's "A Sunday." You can watch the YouTube video here: The pop-rock acts stopped by the NK2 studio in Seattle last week when they decided to cover the popular track from Mesa's Jimmy Eat World's 1999 "Clarity" album. While the cover is practically spot on and a good one, it makes me miss the live version that I witnessed with New Times music editor Martin Cizmar during the band'
